What camera gear should you take, what should you leave at home and what should you buy specifically for your African Safari photography tour?!
It depends on what kind of trip you are doing, what country you are going to and what you will be photographing. The video on this blog post was my safari camera bag for a three week African photography tour to Namibia and Botswana.
1 week in Chobe National Park, Botswana for wildlife
2 weeks in Namibia which included a variety of landscapes, wildlife and portraits
So I needed everything lol! 😂
Here’s the Stats from my Botswana safari…
(Includes photographs and video clips )
241 24-70mm 2.8L II mainly with Canon 5d mark iii
368 70-200mm 2.8L II mainly with Canon 5d Mark ii
1154 100-400mm L II with 1.4x teleconverter mainly with Canon 5d mark iii
3693 100-400mm L II mainly with Canon 5d mark iii
634 Canon G7X (pocket-sized camera)
Plenty more photos were taken in my two weeks in Namibia!
The 70-200mm 2.8L II was mainly used when I needed more light than the 100-400mm would provide. It was usually at the very end of the evening as the sun was setting and wildlife was still be be captured! The Canon 5D Mark iv is incredible in low-light so I’d consider leaving the 70-200mm at home next safari if I was just there to capture wildlife.
There are some great travel pocket sized cameras that are great for safaris if you don’t have or don’t want to take a big camera. Travel cameras have improved immensely over the last few years. I discuss this in more detail on my previous blog post which is linked below.

My Macpac Halo jacket is super warm but very light weight so perfect to pack for those early African Safari mornings before the sun is up and late at night when it can get quite cold. It can attach easily on the side of my camera bag with the hand straps.
